BLASPHEMY/ਕੁਫ਼ਰ

ABSTRACT

The word “Blasphemy” has been used in recent years by political or religious leaders or others to divert attention or to control the rabble (spiritually ignorant or otherwise). It has been used very loosely even by Sikhs towards others actions and calling it blasphemous. Blasphemy is defined by various dictionaries as:
1.
a.    A contemptuous or profane act, utterance, or writing concerning God or a sacred entity or disrespect for religion.
b.    The act of claiming for oneself the attributes and rights of God.
2.    An irreverent or impious act, attitude, or utterance in regard to something considered inviolable or sacrosanct.
Blasphemy Synonyms:

1.                  An act of disrespect or impiety toward something regarded as sacred: desecration, profanation, sacrilege, violation.
2.                   A profane or obscene term: curse, epithet, expletive, oath, swearword. Informal: cuss. See decent, sacred, words.
                  ----------------------------------------------------
The term blasphemy may be generally defined as "defiant irreverence." I would apply the term to such sins as cursing God or willfully degrading things relating to God. It is also attributing some evil to God, or denying God or some good that we should attribute to It. also could be a blasphemy when someone accuses Sikh Gurus of something false. In Christianity, it is an unpardonable/unforgivable sin when committed against Christ or Holy Spirit.
Sikh principles clearly state “as you sow, so shall you reap” and each one is responsible for the consequences of their own actions say Guru Nanak:

Lėkẖā iko āvhu jāhu. Ėkā suraṯ jeṯe hai jī▫a.Suraṯ vihūṇā ko▫e na kī▫a. Jehī suraṯ ṯehā ṯin rāhu.

There is one awareness among all created beings. None have been created without this awareness.  As is their awareness, so is their way. According to the account of our actions, we come and go.-----Guru Nanak, Sri Raag, AGGS, Page, 25-1

Nanak says, O mind, listen to the True Teachings. God will call each to his account by opening the ledger. Those rebels who have unpaid accounts shall be called out. Azrael, the Angel of Death, shall be appointed to punish them. They will find no way to escape coming and going in reincarnation; they are trapped in the narrow path. Falsehood will come to an end, O Nanak, and Truth will prevail in the end. -----Guru Nanak, Raag Ramkali, AGGS, Page, 953

Here I make a plea to the members to look into the subject of Blasphemy a little more deeply and leave everyone alone and concern to themselves.

Question is who defines the blasphemous act?
Is it blasphemous to be atheist or agnostic?
There are an estimated 20 to 30 million atheists in the United States these days, and some of them say they feel like a persecuted minority.
Even in a civil academic discussion, and agreeing to disagree this word has been used by some on controversial issues with differences of opinion or in understanding the Philosophy contained in Sabd Guru.
Is it ok to instill the fear of God in people?  It has been discussed in the Christian world being blasphemous to Jesus by atheists by creating fear of hell.
Sabd Guru answers it that God is found through Its love and fear:
Dar Ghar Ghar Dar Dar Dar Jaaey, So Dar Kayhaa Jit Dar Dar Paa-ay. Ŧuḏẖ bin ḏūjī nāhī jā▫e.Jo kicẖẖ varṯai sabẖ ṯerī rajā▫e. Darī▫ai je dar hovai hor.Dar dar darṇā man kā sor.  rahā▫o.Nā jī▫o marai na dūbai ṯarai.Jin kicẖẖ kī▫ā so kicẖẖ karai.Hukme āvai hukme jā▫e.Āgai pācẖẖai hukam samā▫e.

Place the Fear of God within the home of your heart; with this Fear of God in your heart, all other fears shall be frightened away. What sort of fear is that, which frightens other fears? Without You, I have no other place of rest at all. Whatever happens, is all according to Your Will. Be afraid, if you have any fear, other than the Fear of God. Afraid of fear, and living in fear, the mind is held in tumult. Pause. The soul does not die; it does not drown, and it does not swim across. The One who created everything does everything. By the Will of Its Command we come, and by the Will of Its  Command we go. Before and after, God’s Command is pervading. -----Guru Nanak, Raag Gauri, AGGS, Page, 151-7
Gur cẖarnī man lāgā.Ŧā jam kā mārag bẖāgā. Bhai Vich Nirbhou Paeyaa, Taa Sahjai Kai Ghar Aa-i-aa.
When the mind is attached to the Guru's Feet, then the Path of Death recedes. Through the Fear of God, one attains the Fearless God, then, one enters the home of celestial bliss.-----Guru Nanak, Raag Sorath, AGGS, Page, 599-11
Sabd Guru References clearly show that consequences will be suffered by the individual committing blasphemy as judged by the Highest Power.
No one has seen that Power and no one has seen the consequences of their actions and more so no one remembers about their last life if there was one or it is the first and the last one.
Adisat Disai Taa Kahi-aa Jaa-ay Bin ḏekẖe kahṇā birthā jā▫e.Gurmukẖ ḏīsai sahj subẖā▫e.Sevā suraṯ ek liv lā▫e.

If the Unseen God could be seen, then It could be described
Without seeing God, all descriptions are useless. The Guru oriented sees God with intuitive ease. So serve the One God, with loving awareness. -----Guru Nanak, Raag Gauri Guarary, AGGS, Page, 22-12

No one knows what happens after death as quoted by Guru Nanak in Ragas Malar and Gauri:
KahaaN Tay Aa-i-aa KahaaN Ayhu Jaan, Jeevat Marat Rahai Parvaan. Hukmai Boojhai Tat Pachhaanai, Ih Parsaad Guroo Tay Jaanai.

Where has one come from, and where will one go after death? Remaining dead while yet alive, he is accepted and approved. Whoever understands the Will of the God's Command, realizes the essence of reality, this is known by Guru's Grace.-----Guru Nanak, Raag Malar, AGGS, Page, 1289-6
Jaato Jaa-ay Kahaa Tay Aavai, Kah Upjai Kah Jaa-ay Samaavai. Ki-o BaaDhi-o Ki-o Muktee Paavai, Ki-o Abhinaasee Sahj Samaavai.

How can we know where we came from? Where did we originate, and where will we go and merge? How are we bound, and how do we obtain liberation? How do we merge with intuitive ease into the Eternal, Imperishable Creator?-----Guru Nanak, Raag Gauri, AGGS, Page, 152

Guru Nanak has used the word Kufar (ਕੁਫਰ) in Majh Ki Vaar translated as a liar or atheist describing the consequences:
Rāh ḏovai ik jāṇai so▫ī sijẖsī. Kufar go▫a kufrāṇai pa▫i▫ā ḏajẖsī. Sabẖ ḏunī▫ā sub▫hān sacẖ samā▫ī▫ai. Sijẖai ḏar ḏīvān āp gavā▫ī▫ai.

One knowing both paths (Hindu & Muslim) is to be the one who alone will find fulfillment. One who repudiates this faith will burn in the fire of hell. The whole world is holy. Be absorbed in its purity and by discarding egoism does one finds acceptance at God’s portal and Its Divine Court.-----Guru Nanak, Raag Majh Ki Vaar, AGGS, Page, 142-8

Q. How come everyone is interested in judging others rather than themselves against the advice contained in Sabd Guru:
Nānak parkẖė āp kao ṯā pārakẖ jāṇ. Rog ḏārū ḏovai bujẖai ṯā vaiḏ sujāṇ.vāt na kar▫ī māmlā jāṇai mihmāṇ.Mūl jāṇ galā kare hāṇ lā▫e hāṇ.Lab na cẖal▫ī sacẖ rahai so visat parvāṇ.

O Nanak, if someone judges himself, only then is he known as a real judge. If someone understands both the disease and the medicine, only then is he a wise physician. Do not involve yourself in idle business on the way; remember that you are only a guest here. Speak with those who know the Primal God, and renounce your evil ways. That virtuous person who does not walk in the way of greed, and who abides in Truth, is accepted and famous.-----Guru Angad Dev, Raag Majh, AGGS, Page, 148-8

No one pays for another’s account or consequences of actions. Each one is responsible for his or her action says Guru Amar Das in Ragas Ramkali, Majh & Gauri:

Jithai lėkẖā mangīai ṯithai cẖẖutai sacẖ kamāė Saṯgur sevan se ḏẖanvanṯe aithai othai nām samāvaṇi▫ā.

God will call to answer for one’s account, where one shall only be emancipated by true actions. Those who serve the True Guru shall prosper; here and hereafter, they are absorbed in the Naam.-----Guru Amar Das, Raag Majh, AGGS, Page, 112-3

God summons the slanderers to answer for their accounts and punishes them severely. As the slanderers think of acting, so are the fruits they obtain. Actions done in secrecy are sure to come to light, even if one does it underground. Servant Nanak blossoms forth in joy, beholding the glorious greatness of God. -----Guru Amar Das, Raag Gauri, AGGS, Page, 316-6

In the Fear of God, is the Love of God? Only those few who understand Its Love obtain Its sublime essence, O Siblings of Destiny. As many hearts as there are - in all of them, is Its Ambrosial Nectar; as It pleases, It causes them to drink it in.-----Bhagat Kabir, Raag Kedara, AGGS, Page, 1123-15

You tear off the leaves, O gardener, but in each and every leaf, there is life. That stone idol, for which you tear off those leaves - that stone idol is lifeless. In this, you are mistaken, O gardener. The True Guru is the Living God. When you break these three gods, whose service are you performing? The sculptor carves the stone and fashions it into an idol, placing his feet upon its chest. If this stone god was true, it would devour the sculptor for this!-----Kabir, Raag Asa, AGGS, Page, 479

Namdev was looking was his Guru Vittal, who to test him lied down in front of the temple as a leper with his feet on the Shiv Lingam. On questioning that he is becoming blasphemous by putting the feet in the religious symbol. Vittal replied that he could not find a place where God is not.

If You gave me an empire, then what glory would be in it for me? If You made me beg for charity, what would it take away from me? Meditate and vibrate upon God, O my mind, and you shall obtain salvation. You shall not have to take birth again. You created all, and You lead them astray in doubt. They alone understand, unto whom You give understanding. Meeting the True Guru, doubt is dispelled. Who else should I worship? I can see no other. One stone is being adored, while another stone is trodden under foot. If one is a god, then the other must be God too. I serve the God says Naam Dev.-----Bhagat Namdev, Raag Gujri, AGGS, Page, 525

Guru Nanak was called a Kufar (ਕੁਫਰ) by Mullah during his visit to Mecca:
Jeevan Mari Lat Di Kehrha Suta Kufar Kufari.Lata Val Khudaey De Keo Kar Peya Hoey Bajgari.
The Qazi named Jeevan kicked him and asked who was this infidel enacting blasphemy. Why this sinner is sleeping his legs spread towards God?------Bhai Gurdas, Vaar 1, Pauri 32-5

Conclusion:

In the final analysis, it is difficult to say as to who committed blasphemy and who diagnosed it by being a judge and jury. IMHO it serves no purpose except for creating ill-feelings between members and actually is a waste of time. We should leave it as agree to disagree without hurting one another’s feelings and getting upset unnecessarily as God cannot be disrespected as answered by Guru Nanak in Raag Asa and Kabir in Raag Gauri answer:

Even if everyone together spoke of God It would not become any greater or any lesser. God does not die; there is no reason to mourn. God continues to give, and Its Provisions never run short. This Virtue is Its alone; there is no other like God. There never has been, and there never will be any other.   ----Guru Nanak, Raag Asa, AGGS, Page, 9

God does not increase or decrease, is unknowable, immaculate, and does not change.-----Kabir, Raag Gauri Thiti, AGGS, Page, 343-9

Those who would call me God they will fall into the deep pit of hell. Know me as Its servant and nothing is other than truth in it. I am the humble servant of the Supreme God and have come to see the acrobatic play of the world. -----DG, Page, 57

BLESSINGS   OF NAAM

ABSTRACT

Naam in Sikhism is the spiritual wisdom, only obtained through the Grace of God. The blessings are only showered through singing praises of God and doing good deeds.

Karaṇ palāh kare bahuṯere sā ḏẖan mahal na pāvai.viṇ karmā kicẖẖ pāīai nāhī jė bahuṯėrā ḏẖāvai. Lab lobẖ ahaʼnkār kī māṯī mā▫i▫ā māhi samāṇī.Inī bāṯī saho pā▫ī▫ai nāhī bẖa▫ī kāmaṇ i▫āṇī.

All the Sikhs pray (ਅਰਦਾਸ) to God every day for the blessing of God’s Name (Gift of Naam). The soul may plead and implore so many times, such a bride shall not obtain the Mansion of God's Presence. Without virtuous deeds, an individual cannot gain anything useful despite running around. The soul is intoxicated with greed, pride, and egotism in Maya (Materialism) and cannot obtain her Husband God in these ways; the young bride is so foolish! ------Guru Nanak, Raag Tilang, AGGS. Page, 722-9

               --------------------------------------------------

The question comes to mind as to what gift of the Naam is and what does it mean to a Sikh? Does every Sikh understand as to what do they intend by supplicating, and seeking the blessings of Naam? Most probably the answers to these questions is a big No. It is just a mechanical recitation (without understanding) in Prayer (ਅਰਦਾਸ) based on the tradition and words written by some Sikhs for making some selfish demands to fulfill material desires.

Most of us might be under the impression that it means reciting the word of Waheguru or Satinam/ਸਤਿਨਾਮ, but Guru Nanak says in Japji that it is so difficult that even one has millions of tongues, then it may be possible to become one in Union with God:

Ik ḏū jībẖou lakẖ hohi lakẖ hoveh lakẖ vīs. Lakẖ lakẖ gėṛā ākẖīahi ėk nām jagḏīs. Ėṯ rāhi paṯ pavṛī▫ā cẖaṛī▫ai ho▫e ikīs.

If one had 100,000 tongues, and these were then multiplied twenty times more, with each tongue, one would repeat, hundreds of thousands of times, the Name of the One, God of the Universe. One may climb these steps of the ladder, and come to merge with God. -----Guru Nanak, Japji, AGGS, Page, 7-6
Most likely it means we are supplicating for the blessings of the Divine Wisdom and seeking to root out duality and doubt from our consciousness and then one may be blessed by the Grace of God.

Giān na galīī dẖūdẖīai kathnā karṛā sār. Karam milai ṯā pāīai hor hikmaṯ hukam kẖuār.

Divine knowledge is not attained by mere words.  To explain this is as hard as steel. When the God bestows Its Grace, then alone it is received; other tricks and orders are useless.  -----Guru Nanak Asa Di Vaar, AGGS, Page, 465-1

Divine Knowledge is the awareness and understanding of facts, truths or information gained in the form of learning. The purpose of Divine knowledge is to find the Truth and to develop inner cleanliness by subjugating our animal instincts and developing godly virtues instead.

Saglī ḏẖarṯī māl ḏẖan varṯaṇ sarab janjāl. Nānak musai giān vihūṇī kẖāė gaiā jamkāl.

All the land, property, wealth and material things are all entanglements. O, Nanak, without Divine Knowledge, one is plundered, and devoured by the Messenger of Death. -----Guru Nanak, Raag Asa, AGGS, Page, 465-6

Spiritual ignorance is going to persist in individuals, who do not try to sharpen their mind with an active attempt in controlling and purifying it with the medicine of Truth. Guru Nanak advises a Yogi in Raag Suhi:
Jog na kẖinthā jog na dandai jog na bẖasam cẖaṛāīai. Jog na munḏī mūnd mudāiai jog na sińī vāīai. Anjan māhi niranjan rahīai jog jugaṯ iv pāīai. Galī jog na hoī. Ėk ḏarisat kar samsar jāṇai jogī kahīai soī.

Yoga is not the patched coat; Yoga is not the walking stick. Yoga is not smearing the body with ashes. Yoga is not the earrings and not the shaven head. Yoga is not the blowing of the horn. Remaining unblemished in the midst of the filth of the world - this is the way to attain Yoga. By mere words, Yoga is not attained. One who looks upon all with a single eye, and knows them to be one and the same - he alone is known as a Devotee.-----Guru Nanak, Raag Suhi, AGGS, Page, 730-18

Spiritual ignorance is the shoreless ocean of darkness, with no light at the end of the tunnel. Spiritual ignorance is a very serious matter. It is said that "What you don't know won't hurt you". We all know that is incorrect and yet it seems that many people have adopted that philosophy toward spiritual matters.  Many people are destroyed for a lack of spiritual knowledge. Spiritual ignorance is not merely the lack of knowledge, but also the self-destructive turning away from the truth in all areas of life.  To be ignorant of one's ignorance is a further malady of the ignorant.

Giān hīṇaʼn agiān pūjā. Anḏẖ varṯāvā bẖāo ḏūjā. Gur bin gi▫ān ḏẖaram bin ḏẖi▫ān.Sacẖ bin sākẖī mūlo na bākī

Without spiritual wisdom, people worship ignorance. They grope in the darkness, in the love of duality. Without the Guru, there is no spiritual wisdom; without righteous conduct, there is no meditation. Without Truth, there is no credit; without capital, there is no balance. -----Guru Nanak, Sloke Varan To Vadheek, AGGS, Page, 1412-4

Thus, a Sikh prays for the restoration of original Naam consciousness, which is a fully awakened state and should be the foremost goal of a dedicated Sikh. The awakened spiritual consciousness is the spontaneous manifestations of radiant calmness, mental clarity; spontaneity, simplicity, and natural ease.  These are the signs of having received the blessings of the Grace of Naam. This is acknowledged by an attitude of gratitude to “God” for Its benevolence and Grace. We benefit by acknowledging the expressed, divine qualities of enlightened souls because such recognition aids us in our own awakening.

He alone is learned and wise, and he alone is a scholar, who contemplates the Name and acquires Divine Wisdom. First, the tree puts down its roots, and then it spreads out its shade above.-----Guru Nanak, Raag Malar, AGGS, Page, 1288-6

"Our Gurus have given God the name of Sat (Truth). It alone existed and will exist." If the name of God is Truth (Sat) then Truth needs to be lived rather than be just recited as Truth or as "Satinam/ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ".

Everyone chants God's Name, Ram, Ram.  It is not obtained by any such chanting, Only by Guru's Grace, It comes to dwell in the mind, and then, the fruits are obtained.-----Guru Amar Das, Raag Gujri, AGGS, Page, 491-1

O, Nanak, in the Company of the Holy, and God’s love, the Divine knowledge is awakened. God 's Mercy is bestowed upon those who are blessed with such good destiny. -----Guru Arjun, Raag Asa, AGGS, Page, 380-8

Once the mind is stilled, in between two thoughts, it can energize itself towards being a candidate for God’s Grace, to be blessed with Divine knowledge. Kabir proclaimed in Raag Gauri that the mind can then come to have the knowledge of the three worlds.

Ih man le ja▫o unman rahai.Ŧa▫o ṯīn lok kī bāṯai kahai.

When this mind is channeled, and guided to enlightenment, it can describe the secrets of the three worlds. -----Kabir, Raag Gauri, AGGS, Page 342

I am bothered by my mother-in-law, Maya, and loved by my father-in-law, the Akal Purkh. I fear even the name of my husband's elder brother, Death. Kabir, it does make a difference, how you chant God's Name, 'Ram'. This is something to consider. Everyone uses the same word for the son of Dasrath and the Wondrous God. Kabir, use the word 'Ram', only to speak of the All-pervading God You must make that distinction. One 'Ram' is pervading everywhere, while the other is contained only in God.-----Kabir Slokes 190, 191, AGGS, Page, 1374-14,15

An individual becomes calm in the measure that he or she understands himself or herself as a being of evolved thinking.  Such knowledge necessitates an understanding of others.  As one develops a right understanding, and sees more and more clearly the internal relations of things in terms of cause and effect, one  ceases to fuss and fume, to worry and grieve, and remains poised, steadfast and serene-“Dead while Alive/ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ

Since the Guru oriented attains divine knowledge, they are called knowledgeable ones. Guru oriented has the wisdom fully stamped and marked by the Word.-----Bhai Gurdas, Vaar 19, Pauri, 15

Conclusion:

The calm individual, having learned to govern him/her self, knows how to adapt to the others.  They, in turn, revere his or her spiritual strength and feel that they can learn from him or her and rely on him or her. The more tranquil an individual becomes, the greater is his success, influence, and power to do good. Such an individual will find his outlook broadens as he or she develops a greater self-control and equanimity.  People will always prefer to deal with the individual whose demeanor is distinctly equable. This is only possible with the help of Sabd Guru through supplication for the Grace of God.

Without the Guru, celestial peace is not produced, O Siblings of Destiny; go and ask the spiritual teachers about this. Serve the True Guru forever, O Siblings of Destiny, and eradicate self-conceit from within. Under Guru's Instruction, the Fear of God is produced, O Siblings of Destiny; true and excellent are the deeds done in the Fear of God. Then, one is blessed with the treasure of the Lord's Love, O Siblings of Destiny, and the Support of the True Name. -----Guru Amar Das, Raag Sorath, AGGS, Page, 638-15
