ESSENCE/REALITY/TAT//ਤਤ/ਅਸਲੀਅਤ

ABSTRACT

Reality is defined as the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them.

The dictionary defines it:

1.
    a. The intrinsic or indispensable quality or qualities that serve to characterize or identify something: The essence of democracy is the freedom to choose.

    b. The inherent, unchanging nature of a thing or class of things.

2. The most important part or aspect of something.

3. Something that exists, especially a spiritual or incorporeal entity. (Theology)  An immaterial or spiritual entity.

The Gurmukhi words ਤਤ/ਤਤਿ/ਤਤੁ/ਤੱਤ cannot be translated into the English word element.

Mahan Kosh describes these as:

ਤਤ-Tat-  (1) ਤਤ੍ਵ, ਅਸਲੀਅਤ, ਸਾਰ ਵਸਤੂ (2) ਭੂਤ, ਅਨਾਸਰ ਸਾਧਾਰਣ ਮੂਲ ਪਦਾਰਥ (ਕੋਸ਼) (3) ਉਥੇ, ਉਧਰ ਤਤ੍ਰ (4) ਆਤਮ ਤਤ (5) ਤੁਰੰਤ, ਫੌਰਨ, ਤਤਕਾਲ ਦਾ ਸੰਖੇਪ (6) ਤਦ, ਤਦੋ (7) ਨਿਚੋੜ, ਸਾਰ (8) ਬ੍ਰਹਮ, ਹਰੀ

ਤਤਿ-Tati- (1) ਸਾਰ ਨਾਲ, ਤਤ ਨਾਲ, ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨਾਲ (2) ਵੀਚਾਰ (3) ਤਤ ਸਰੂਪ ਹਰਿ, ਬ੍ਰਹਮ.

ਤਤੁ-Tatu-(1) ਮੂਲ ਭਾਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਹਰਿ, ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ (2) ਅਸਲੀਅਤ (3) ਤਤੁ (4) ਸਾਰ, ਨਿਚੋੜ (5) ਅਨਸਰ, ਭੂਤ, ਸਾਧਾਰਨ ਮੂਲ ਪਦਾਰਥ (6) ਮਖਣ (7) ਅਸਲੀ, ਸ਼ੁਧ, ਠੀਕ (8) ਤਤਕਾਲ, ਤੁਰੰਤ, ਝਟਪਟ (9) ਗਿਆਨ (10) ਜੋਤ
ਤੱਤ-  Tut- (1) ਦੇਖੋ, ਤਤੁ (2) ਵਿ- ਤਤ (ਪੌਣ) ਰੂਪ. ਹਵਾ ਜੇਹਾ ਚਾਲਾਕ. "ਚੜ੍ਯੋ ਤੱਤ ਤਾਜੀ". (ਪਾਰਸਾਵ).
When you argue with reality, you lose - but only 100% of the time. To understand reality is not the same as to know about outward events. It is to perceive the essential nature of things. The best-informed man is not necessarily the wisest. Indeed there is a danger that precisely in the multiplicity of his knowledge he will lose sight of what is essential. But on the other hand, knowledge of an apparently trivial detail quite often makes it possible to see into the depth of things. And so the wise man will seek to acquire the best possible knowledge about events, but always without becoming dependent upon this knowledge. To recognize the significant in the factual is wisdom. Reality does not conform to the ideal, but confirms it and leaves a lot to the imagination.

It is defined as the quality or state in the totality of all things possessing actuality, existence, or essence. Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, but it is also stranger than we can imagine.

Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.                            -----Albert Einstein

Guru Nanak ponders on reality in Japji, Ragas Majh, Gauri, and Asa:

ਸਹਸ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਕਹਨਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਅਸੁਲੂ ਇਕੁ ਧਾਤੁ
ਲੇਖਾ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੈ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪੁ
Sahas aṯẖārah kahan kaṯėbā asulū ik ḏẖāṯ. Lėkẖā ho¬ė ṯa likī¬ai lėkẖai ho¬ė viṇās. Nānak vadā ākẖī¬ai āpė jāṇai āp.

The scriptures say that there are 18,000 worlds, but in reality, there is only One Universe. If you try to write an account of this, you will surely finish yourself before you finish writing it. O Nanak, call God Great! It knows Itself. -----Guru Nanak, Japji, AGGS, Page, 5-3 &4

ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ਸਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
Pe▫ī▫aṛai jin jāṯā pi▫ārā.Gurmukẖ būjẖai ṯaṯ bīcẖārā.Āvaṇ jāṇā ṯẖāk rahā▫e sacẖai nām samāvaṇi▫ā. 

She, who knows her Beloved in her parents' house, as Guru oriented, comes to understand the essence of reality; she contemplates her God (Husband). Her (Soul) comings and goings cease, and she is absorbed in the True Name. ----Guru Nanak, Raag Majh, AGGS, Page, 109-17 

ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਕਿਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਭੇਟਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹੀ
Jėṯī hai ṯėṯī kihu nāhī. Gurmukẖ gi¬ān bẖėt guṇ gāhī.

Whatever exists is in reality nothing. Obtaining spiritual wisdom from the Guru, I sing the Glories of God.-----Guru Nanak, Raag Gauri, AGGS, Page, 226-19

ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਖਸੂਦੁ ਲੈਹੁ ਮਤ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੁ
ਅਉਗਣ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਰਹੁ ਐਸੇ ਤਤੁ ਪਰਾਵਹੁ
vaṇaj karahu makẖsūḏ laihu maṯ pacẖẖoṯāvahu. A¬ugaṇ cẖẖodahu guṇ karahu aisė ṯaṯ parāvahu.

Make your deals, and obtain the true merchandise, or else you shall regret it later. Abandon your vices, and practice virtue, and you shall obtain the essence of reality. -----Guru Nanak, Raag Asa Kafi, AGGS, Page 418-12 13

Gurus Amar Das and Arjan ponder on it in Ragas Majh, and Funhay:

ਨਿਰਗੁਣੁ ਸਰਗੁਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੋਈ
ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਹੋਈ
Nirguṇ sarguṇ āpė so¬ī. Ŧaṯ pacẖẖāṇai so pandiṯ ho¬ī.

God, Itself is Unmanifest and Unrelated; It is Manifest and Related as well. Those who recognize this essential reality are the true Pundits, the spiritual scholars.-----Guru Amar Das, Raag Majh, AGGS, Page, 128-13
ਸਰੀਰਿ ਸਰੋਵਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਟਿ ਕੀਏ ॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਥਿ ਤਤੁ ਕਢੀਏ ॥੪॥੫॥੫੭॥
Sarīr sarovar guṇ pargat kī▫e.Nānak gurmukẖ math ṯaṯ kadẖī▫e. 

The ocean of the body yields pearls of virtue. O Nanak, the Gurmukh churns this ocean and discovers this essence.  ----Guru Ram Das, Raag Asa, AGGS, Page, 367-5

ਮਿਤ ਕਾ ਚਿਤੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਮਰੰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੀਐ  
ਗਾਹਕ ਗੁਨੀ ਅਪਾਰ ਸੁ ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਨੀਐ
Miṯ kā cẖiṯ anūp maramm na jānī¬ai. Gāhak gunī apār so ṯaṯ pacẖẖānī¬ai.

The Consciousness of my Friend is incomparably beautiful. Its mystery cannot be known. One who purchases the priceless virtues realizes the essence of reality. -----Guru Arjun, Funhay Mahla 5, AGGS, Page, 1362-13,14

ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੋਨੋ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਮਾਨੁ ਅਪਮਾਨਾ ॥
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤਾ ਤਿਨਿ ਜਗਿ ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
Sukẖ ḏukẖ ḏono sam kar jānai a▫or mān apmānā.Harakẖ sog ṯe rahai aṯīṯā ṯin jag ṯaṯ pacẖẖānā. 

One who knows that pain and pleasure are both the same, and honor and dishonor as well, who remains detached from joy and sorrow, realizes the true essence in the world. -----Guru Tegh Bahadur, Raag Gauri, AGGS, Page, 219-3

ਲੋਚਾ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਇਹੁ ਬਿਉਹਾਰਾ ॥
ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਕਿਆ ਅਵਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
Locẖā samsar ih bi▫uhārā.Ŧaṯ bīcẖār ki▫ā avar bīcẖārā.

To look upon all with an impartial eyelet this is your daily occupation. Contemplate this essence of reality - what else is there to contemplate?-----Kabir, Raag Gauri, AGGS, Page, 327-8

ਜਲ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਕੁੰਭ ਸਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
ਸਭ ਰਾਮੁ ਏਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲੇ ਹੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
ਜਨ ਨਾਮੈ ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥੩॥੩॥
Jal bẖīṯar kumbẖ samāni▫ā.Sabẖ rām ek kar jāni▫ā.Gur cẖele hai man māni▫ā.Jan nāmai ṯaṯ pacẖẖāni▫ā.

The water is contained within the pitcher; I know that t One God is contained in all. The mind of the disciple has faith in the Guru. Servant Naam Dev understands the essence of reality.-----Namdev, Raag Sorath, AGGS, Page, 657-4

ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਖਾਇਆ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਬਧਾਇਆ ਖਿੰਥਾ ਮੁੰਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
ਭੂਮਿ ਮਸਾਣ ਕੀ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
Gẖar gẖar kẖā▫i▫ā pind baḏẖā▫i▫ā kẖinthā munḏa mā▫i▫ā.Bẖūm masāṇ kī bẖasam lagā▫ī gur bin ṯaṯ na pā▫i▫ā. 

You eat in each and every house, fattening your body; you wear the patched coat and the ear-rings of the beggar, for the sake of wealth. You apply the ashes of cremation to your body, but without a Guru, you have not found the essence of reality. -----Trilochan, Raag Gujri, AGGS, Page, 526-2 

ਜੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡੇ ਸੋਈ ਪਿੰਡੇ ਜੋ ਖੋਜੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
ਪੀਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਪਰਮ ਤਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਲਖਾਵੈ ॥੨॥੩॥
Jo barahmanḏe so▫ī pinde jo kẖojai so pāvai.Pīpā paraṇvai param ṯaṯ hai saṯgur ho▫e lakẖāvai. 

The One who pervades the Universe also dwells in the body; whoever seeks Him, finds Him there. Pippa prays, God is the supreme essence; It reveals Itself through the True Guru. -----Pippa, Raag Dhanasari, AGGS, Page, 695-15

Conclusion:

The self-enlightenment consists of direct access to the Divine and realizing that Divine Wisdom resides within your own soul. There are three particular life principles that help to align your perspective with the perspective of the divine essence and thus facilitate the self-enlightenment experience:

1) Seeing the Divine in all;
2) Nurturance of life.
3) An attitude of Gratitude.

ਮਾਨ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ਮੰਧੇ ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਨਾਹੀ
ਤਤ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਟਿ ਮੰਧਾਹੀ
Mān abimān manḏẖė so sėvak nāhī. Ŧa samarasī sanahu ko¬ī kot manḏẖāhī.

One who is influenced by praise and blame is not God's servant. One who sees the essence of reality with impartial vision, O Saints, is very rare-one among millions.-----Guru Arjun, Sri Raag, AGGS, Page, 51-14
