SOUL MATE

ABSTRACT

The word Soul Mate is a misnomer as no two souls are alike and it should not be confused with true love. The term Soul Mates means many things, which are consciences that you have experienced with in past, parallel or future lifetimes. They can also be aspects of your conscience experiencing at this time in another body. We are all having multidimensional beings - your conscience having experiences, in many realities, at the same time. As we all evolve from the same source of consciousness creation - we could say that we are all souls’ mates in a manner of speaking. It could be said that two persons compatible with each other in disposition, point of view, or sensitivity may be soul mates. You feel closer to certain persons, because you have attracted them into your life as they are on the same frequency as you or because you want to work out issues with them. There is a special bond between such individuals like unconditional love, respect for each other, bringing out the best in each other with complete compatibility.

Soul mate thinking/proposition is living in a world of fantasy. It is dreamt but not found in the present world except in the final spiritual union with God after death as expressed by Guru Amar Das in Raag Suhi, which is usually recited at the time of wedding while performing Lavan (Circle Ambulation around AGGS):

ਧਨ ਪਿਰੁ ਏਹਿ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਬਹਨਿ ਇਕਠੇ ਹੋਇ
ਏਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਧਨ ਪਿਰੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋਇ
Ḏẖan pir ėhi na ākẖīan bahan ikṯẖė hoė. Ėk joṯ ḏuė mūrṯī ḏẖan pir kahīai soė.

They are not said to be husband and wife, who merely sit together. They alone are called husband and wife, who have one light in two bodies.-----Guru Amar Das, Raag Suhi, AGGS, Page, 788

Guru Amar Das again qualifies his statement in Siri Raag:

ਏਹੁ ਸਹਸਾ ਮੂਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਭਾਉ ਲਾਏ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ
Ėhu sahsā mūlė nāhī bẖāo lāė jan koė. Nānak ėk joṯ ḏuė mūrṯī sabaḏ milāvā hoe.

There is no doubt at all about this, but those who love God are very rare. O Nanak, the One Light has two forms; through the Sabd, union is attained.-----Guru Amar Das, Siri Raag, AGGS, Page, 30

In actual reality IMHO soul mate is a bunch of beans. It only works till the man says “I Do”. In a second after that bride wants to change her husband in to soul mate, so he has to like what she likes period-term used as henpecked. One day Guru Amar Das’s wife Mansa Devi seeing their daughter playing remarked to her husband that she has arrived at puberty and we should find a suitable husband for her. At that time Ram Das working for the Guru (Later becomes the 4rth Guru) passed by hawking some articles. She said that search a youth like him to be Bibi Bhani’s husband. Hearing this, the guru exclaimed, he is his own parallel, for God had made none other like him.

Spiritually marriage usually means death and absorption of the soul in to the Supreme Conscience, which is the real soul mate. In this world it is only give and take to make the marriage happy, which is not very commonly found. In case bride is unhappy Sheikh Farid Ji comments in his Slokes:

ਜਾਂ ਕੁਆਰੀ ਤਾ ਚਾਉ ਵੀਵਾਹੀ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਮਲੇ ॥
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਏਹੋ ਪਛੋਤਾਉ ਵਤਿ ਕੁਆਰੀ ਨ ਥੀਐ  ॥

“JaaN Ku-aaree Taa Chaa-ou Veevaahee TaaN Maamlay, Faridaa Ayho Pachhotaa-ou Vat Ku-aaree Na Thee-ai”

When the woman is a virgin, she is full of desire; but when she is married, then her troubles begin again. Farid, she has this one regret, that she cannot be a virgin again..-----Sheikh Farid Slokes, AGGS, Page, 1381-6

Conclusion:

It could be said that soul mate is a poetical description of a happy couple, only to be obtained with spiritual growth and neither through internet, nor match making and even not by love affair. A soul mate is one whose lock and keys fit one another. Each feels safe to open each other’s locks with their own keys with complete trust. They honestly are in total and unconditional love with out any pretensions. Each shares deepest longings, sense of direction and makes life come to life.  In reality it is difficult to come by and very rare as is evident from the following hymn of Guru Amar Das in Raag Maru:

ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਟੋਲਿ ਲਹੁ ਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
ਤਿਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਮੁਖੁ ਉਜਲਾ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥

Sach Ratay Say Tol Lahu Say Virlay Sansaar, Tin Mili-aa Mukh Ujlaa Jap Naam Muraar”

Seek and find those who are imbued with Truth; they are so rare in this world. Meeting with them, one's face becomes radiant and bright, chanting the Name of the God.-----Guru Amar Das, Raag Maru, AGGS, Page, 994-10
